Meeting Minutes: December 2, 2009

Present: J. Appelget, D. Beaudoin, G. Blievernicht, M. Carbary, A. Carey, M. Cribley, C. Corcoran, D. Forro, K. Horvath, S. Issawi, V. Martz, C. Nichols, K. Oberst, G. Pierce, V. Webster;

  1. Blosser called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
  2. Blosser started introductions of new and current members (Christine Nichols - Kresge Art Museum; Dave Beaudoin - ATS; Ken Horvath - RHS; Summer Issawi - LCTTP trainer; Angela Carey - Physical Plant)
  3. Blosser welcomed the new members and interested attendees. Summarized the mission of ATC CAFÉ and goals of the university to provide accessibility and access to the university.
  4. Blosser requested a review of the minutes from 10/07/09 & 10/21/09 (Blievernicht 1st & Forro 2nd), 11/04/09, (Blievernicht 1st & Corcoran 2nd), passed.
  5. Blosser requested a volunteer to update the ATC CAFE webpage. Pierce volunteered to update the website.
  6. Blosser introduced Martz to summarize captioning of materials for the university. Blievernicht advised You Tube will have a caption option to add to the webcast of video soon. Outside resources can cost $75/hour or more.

    Martz summarized the closed-captioning options, open caption options, windows media viewer, and flash to allow the showing of closed-caption options. Martz provided a handout from PEPNET - Midwest Conference held at MSU on April 2, 2009, regarding captioning options and technologies.

  7. Forro requested tutorials created with Camtasia and how to add captioning to materials using Camtasia. Blosser talked with Gunther and extended an invitation to present information regarding Camtasia at an ATC CAFE meeting (Okemos-based company). Issawi advised Camtasia user groups can demonstrate captioning. Issawi tried Magpie and Camtasia; found Camtasia effective. Corcoran suggested the video "Let's Go State" might need to be captioned.
  8. Blosser announced the next meeting should include a review of the ATC requests for funding.
  9. Blosser will recommend height adjustable tables to provide access to the MSU Main Library ATC station by individuals using wheelchairs. Use of FootMouse requires the adjustable table in the library ATC. Request will be submitted for a couple of stations in the library which will have adjustable/motorized stations. $3000 quote for one station. Components for motorized tables available in Grand Rapids for building as a "kit" in some of the different areas of campus.

    Beaudoin advised the adjustable tables (non-motorized) for the micro labs were not large enough for the scanners (Refer to Steve Jowett - Classroom committee) regarding the accessible stations. Beaudoin advised there is specific funding for rooms; update of the furniture would fit with the plan of updates (new build environments).

    Blievernicht inquired regarding ATS plans to roll out Windows 7. Beaudoin advised Windows 7 will not be rolled out at this time. ATS will not offer VISTA and will stay with XP until everything is stabilized. Virtual systems will be the next development. Blosser stated Windows 7 is being deployed at RCPD and in the MSU Main Library ATC to test the accessibility, and use of a Ghost image to create the current image.

  10. Corcoran asked if the ATC CAFE provides funding for K-12 groups which come through the university to access a publicly offered program. Advised ATC does not provide funding for these types of programs as K-12 groups are renting the facilities at MSU and running their own programs. The K-12 group offering the program is responsible for providing accommodations to K-12 participants with disabilities. If departments on campus offer a K-12 program, then the department sponsoring the program is responsible for providing accommodations.
  11. The meeting was adjourned (Corcoran - moved, Appelget - second) at 4:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Virginia Martz, Recording Secretary
